Current Funding (as Principal Investigator)
Evaluation of the Steps to a Healthier Cleveland (CDC-funded initative. Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Cleveland Department of Public Health. 9/22/06 – 9/21/09.
Description: The Center for Health Promotion Research (CPHR) is contracted to conduct three evaluation projects for the STEPS to a Healthier Cleveland initiative, which focuses on reducing the burden of chronic disease in 14 Cleveland neighborhoods: (1) Monitor and evaluate activities of the 20+ subgrantees of the project who provide programming in the neighborhoods. This is conducted via the online reporting system Steps Process Evaluation Reporting System (SPERS), developed by the CHPR; (2) Coordinate, analyze, and disseminate the locally administered BRFSS (population=residents of Cleveland (http://www.case.edu/affil/healthpromotion/reports.html); and, (3) develop and evaluate a pilot project involving local cornerstores in three neighborhoods with the goal of increasing healthy food options and to help to establish the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Food Policy Coalition (http://cccfoodpolicy.org/)

Impact of the We Run This City Marathon Program. Funded by the YMCA of Greater Cleveland and Mt. Sinai Foundation. 9/1/2007-8/31/2009.
Description: This evaluation study examines the effectiveness of a 12-week, school-based running program where students accumulate 25 miles of conditioning work over 14 weeks and then run the last 1.2 miles of the Cleveland Marathon to complete the program. Study examines change in physical measurements (BMI, body fat, blood pressure, speed/endurance) and self-reported attitudes, intentions and behaviors (i.e, recreational choices, intentions to be active, physical fitness competency, as well as school-related outcomes, such as school attachment, grades & attendance). Self-report data collected on audio-supported PDAs. Data collected just prior to the beginning of training and one week post?race (~12 weeks). Website: http://www.clevelandymca.org/programs/marathon.html

Evaluation of For Keeps: Impact of Program Intensity, Dosage and Facilitator Type among Middle School Students. Funded by Operation Keepsake through subcontract from DHHS Administration on Children, Youth and Families. 9/1/2006 – 8/31/2011.
Description: Group randomized trial, with 18 schools paired according to location, racial and SES composition of student and teachers and then within each pair, randomly assigned to treatment or control arms of the intervention. Students are assessed on both cognitive variables considered to mediate behavior change (i.e, knowledge, efficacy, values, beliefs, social norms, intentions) and behavioral outcomes (i.e., sexual activity, condom use and rate of unprotected sex).

The Changing Construct of Marriage Among High School Students. Funded by Operation Keepsake through subcontract from DHHS Healthy Marriage Demonstration Grant. 9/1/2007-8/31/2011.
The aim of the study is to explore high school adolescents’ attitudes toward marriage, cohabitation, monogamy, and healthy dating relationships through focus groups and cross-sectional survey.

The Cleveland Cornerstore Project. Matt Russell, MNO (PI). Funded through the Healthy Corner Store Network (HCSN). 9/1/2008-8/30/2009.
Description: This project supplements the Cleveland Cornerstore Project funded through the Steps to a Healthier Cleveland. The HCSN support allows the CCP to expand the intervention from three to six cornerstores in Cleveland, encouraging store owners to increase the healthy food options (through product purchase and placement, healthy option labeling, food comparison kiosk, cooking demonstrations) in their store and to reduce youth’s exposure to alcohol and tobacco.

The Community Research Partnership Core (CRPC) of the Cleveland Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative (CTSC). PI: Dr. Pam Davis. ROLE: Co-Director with Dr. Ash Sehgal.
Description: The CRPC includes a number of innovative activities aimed at developing and enhancing relationships between Cleveland community residents and organizations with area researchers interested in community research. Part of the vision of this core is to help empower community residents in research activities. Community residents and organizations are viewed as researchers as well and are provided with opportunities to develop new projects and ideas. The goal is to engage the community in research projects from their inception, and to educate researchers, residents, and organizations about the benefits of community engagement.

Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) PI: Dr. Alison Hall. ROLE: Evaluator. Funded by the MARC Branch of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences.
Description: The PREP Program is designed to support recent underrepresented minority or disadvantaged college graduates who are preparing for a career in biomedical research. The program offers a paid research experience with seasoned investigators in active and dynamic laboratories.
